Dr. Matthew Griffis of the University of Southern Mississippi will be visiting HMRC and GRE to conduct research on the segregated Carnegie Branch of Houston the week of April 23rd.
One of the observations he made, and now a focal point of his research here, is that the building had a separate stacks room. Apparently part of Carnegie's building stipulation was to have the stacks out in the reading areas, not divided off. Griffis says he has not seen such a layout as presented is the architectural plans showcased in our exhibit Matt and Barbara put together. How interesting! He believes that it may be due to the fact that they were able to raise additional funds and might have had some say in the layout of the building.
Here are a few pictures from the presentation he gave on April 12th. Thanks again to Matt and Barbara for developing such a great exhibit!
