Over Time: Documenting Life in the Fourth Ward 1880s-1980s

Pictured here is Mrs. Olee Yates McCullough.  She was a granddaughter to the Rev. Jack Yates; an influential founding member of Freedman’s Town in Houston’s Fourth Ward.  Mrs. McCullough grew up in the Fourth Ward and worked in the Houston public school system until her retirement.  Before her passing she helped open the Rutherford B. H. Yates Museum in her childhood home at 1314 Andrews.

Her papers are archived at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC).  The HMRC and the African American Library at the Gregory School will be presenting selected collections that help provide documentary evidence on what life was like in Freedman’s Town and the Fourth Ward during the span of the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.  Join them February 1, 2018 at 6pm for the event!
