The Julia Ideson Library Preservation Partners (JILPP) is raising $38 million for the expansion and restoration of the 1926 Julia Ideson Building in downtown Houston. More than $21 million has been contributed to date, including $10 million from the City of Houston.
The Julia Ideson Buyilding is one of Houston's most significant architecturla landmarks designed by noted Boston architect Ralph Adams Cram as Houston's main library.
In partnership with the City and the Library Department, JILPP commissioned plans for a state-of-the-are, environmentally sensitive archival storage wing that will be the new home of the valuable arhcives of the Houston Metropolitan Research Center. The expansion will also include an outdoor reading room and south loggia. Construction is currently underway, with substantial completion expected at the end of 2009.
Restoration of the existing building's grand public spaces will begin in 2010.
