We will not go forward just yet with the new registration procedure of retaining photo identification. It is possible that in the near future we will be issuing padlocks as well as keys. Mary is going to do some research on padlock types and report back.
I welcome your input on the pros and cons of using the customer's photo identification as security. Also, please share any questions or concerns you may have.

If the patron refuses to exchange an ID for a locker key, and they also refuse to leave their belongings out in the rotunda, than will they be denied access to the Texas Room?

My only concern is the additional intrusiveness on top of a sign-in process (among other things) that is already pretty off-putting. While we do have patrons who seem to purposefully keynap our keys, it seems that the keys are easily misplaced. It is plausible to me that many of the missing keys were accidentally taken home and then forgotten at the bottom of a purse or in the cushions of a couch. Must we punish all locker users in order to thwart the handful of keynappers! Seriously though, won't this become less of an issue when Jones reopens in May...
I hope this will become less of an issue when Jones reopens, but in the meantime we need some kind of solution. The key/id exchange may be the best way to go to ensure that keys are returned.
As for those who refuse to participate in the exchange, they shouldn't be denied entrance but where they leave their belongings is not our problem.
Since we require patrons to leave some of their belongings outside of the Texas Room, then it becomes our concern.
I have used a locker system where depositing a quarter allows one to remove the locker key. Reinserting the key refunds the quarter. Such a locker system would save us labor and the patronwould be spared some hassle. Perhaps a few of the dollars donated for the bldg renovation could be advanced for this equipment that could still be used after the renovation is complete.
I believe patrons are prohibited from leaving their belongings in the rotunda so they must be refused access if they won't comply with the rules.
